Michigan Works! Resume WritingResume Writing

This class gives an overview of the way the Michigan Talent Bank resumes function:

  • Visible for 30 days
  • Searchable by key words (so repeat, repeat, repeat)
  • Objective must catch employers eye for him/her to choose to view complete resume

The class then covers the need for professional functional-style resumes created as a electronic document specific to the job to which they are applying.

Also, the need for a portfolio is demonstrated. In this case a “portfolio” means any additional pieces of information that can help sell your skills.

Examples include:

  1. A clean presentable resume (and extra copies)
  2. Cover letter(s) addressed to the individual(s) who will be accepting applications
  3. A list of references
  4. A salary history page and/or a salary requirement page
  5. Letters of recommendation
  6. Any relevant certificates or awards—something to demonstrate you have extra training or that you do more than what is required.

The idea behind this strategy is: do whatever it takes to help the employer employ you.
